Even though your dog can’t have chocolate at Easter you can still spoil them with homemade dog treats. Go one step better and hide the treats around the house and garden so they enjoy their own Easter treat hunt – this provides great mental stimulation.
As a dog owner short on time, my perfect dog treat recipe is one that’s simple, and makes use of ingredients found in most kitchens. I’ve tried various recipes and I think my twist on a classic biscuit is bound to satisfy any pooch (our dog loves them). Happy Easter from the Animal Outfitters trio!
Parmesan Cheesy Bites Recipe
- 2½ cups of wholemeal flour
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 1 egg
- 125ml hot water to make stock
- Stock granules (enough to make 125ml)
- 1 – 1 ½ tablespoons parmesan powder*
(* Preferred to normal cheese as it has a stronger flavour)
Method
Pre-heat oven to 180° C. Dissolve the corresponding amount of stock as per the packet instructions in 125ml of boiling water. Put flour, oats, parmesan powder, and salt in a bowl. Beat the egg gently and add to dry ingredients. Add the stock. Knead for 3-4 minutes to form a dough.
Roll out on a lightly floured clean surface. The dough should be about 1-1.5 cm thick. Cut into squares/rectangles or use a cookie cutter if you have one. Line an oven tray with baking paper and add biscuits. Cook for approx 30 mins. Note – I tend to make mine in bite size squares which needs only 15 minutes cooking time. Cooking time will vary based on how big or small you make the biscuits.
Variation: replace the cheese with grated carrot, or cooked bacon bits if your dog can’t have dairy.
