Our peanut butter dog treat recipe is a healthy choice, using simple ingredients you’ll most likely to have in your pantry right now. Using good old breakfast oats and peanut butter you can use up that over-ripe banana in your fruit bowl too!
I’m always looking for homemade dog treats that are both sugar-free and easy to make. This recipe wins, no contest. These crunchy, nutty dog treats drive Rio crazy with excitement – I’m convinced he can smell the peanut butter cooking. It makes a decent sized batch that will keep for up to two weeks in an airtight container.
An important note on peanut butter – use a sugar and salt free version if you’ve got it and make sure it doesn’t include xylitol artificial sweetener as it is toxic for dogs.
Peanut Butter Dog Treats Recipe
- 1 ripe banana
- 200g of rolled oats, or oat flour if you have it
- 3 tablespoons of peanut butter
- 1 egg, beaten
- a dash of water if the mixture is too dry
Method
Blitz the oats in a grinder or food processor to make an oat flour. If you’re using oat flour you can skip this step.
Peel banana, place in a large mixing bowl and mash. Once mashed, add oat flour, peanut butter and egg. Mix until all the ingredients are combined. If your mixture is a bit dry, add a small dash of water to help the mixutre bind into a cookie dough.
Pre-heat oven to 150°C and line a baking sheet with baking paper. While the oven is heating put your dough in the fridge to firm. Once the oven is heated, remove dough from the fridge. Take a small amount of mixture and roll into golf ball sized treats. Transfer them to the baking sheet and use a desert spoon to flatten slightly. Bake for 45 minutes until hard and golden. Transfer baked peanut butter dog treats to a wire rack to cool completely before giving to your dog. These great little treats will stay fresh for one to two weeks in an air-tight container – if they last that long!
Variation: If you don’t have banana, then cooked apple or mashed pear can be used instead. Add some fresh herbs like parsley or mint, for a breath freshening bonus!
