The Animal Outfitters liver cake recipe for dogs

Dogs absolutely love liver cake and it drives our two boys bonkers!

Rio will sit patiently waiting while it’s being prepared – supervising, and hoping that stray ingredients drop on the floor. What makes liver cake so great? It’s an incredibly cost effective, healthy and versatile dog treat. You can bake it in cake form, or in a block which you cut down into small bite size chunks making it a perfect obedience training treat. Plus you can freeze it so you always have some on hand.

The Liver Cake recipe for dogs

Ingredients

  • 450g of lambs liver
  • 225g of flour (we use wholemeal)
  • One egg

Method

Blitz the liver in a food processer. Once it resembles a paste, add in the flour and egg. Keep blitzing until it is thick and combined. Spoon the mixture into your desired cooking container (see below).

You can bake the cake in the oven or microwave, so this will dictate whether you use a metal, ceramic or plastic container. Regardless of what you choose, line it with some baking paper as it makes it so much easier to remove once cooked. You can really use any dish you like. If you want to make a block, then use a slice tray (oven) or rectangular Tuppaware (microwave). Or if you want to opt for a muffin style cake (as pictured), just use a ramekin.

Bake at 180C in the oven, or for a couple of minutes in the microwave. The key is to just keep an eye on it and remove it once the centre is firm. The cooking time will vary depending on the depth of cake and size of container. Once cooked, remove from the container and baking paper and let it cool on a wire rack. Once cool you can cut it into bite size dog treats as desired.

Liver cake will last about five days in an airtight container in the fridge. You can save the rest by freezing it. Give it a go, we think your dog will be delighted. Happy Baking!
